Ultrasonic Thickness Measurement Survey / NDT
Ultrasonic thickness measurement (UTM) is a non-destructive testing method used to inspect the metal thickness of ship hulls, piping, and structural steel. Thickness measuring is essential across many industries to monitor corrosion, erosion, and damage. For a steel vessel the measure menta are carried out every 10 years during the vessels life them once the vessel is 40 years old the measurements are taken every 5 years. The measurements provide an insight to the general thickness of the metal and overall strength of the vessel. Over the lifespan of the vessel most vessels will allow 25-30% wastage before steel replacement is required.
Although mainly used for steel, UTM can also be carried out on other materials such as GRP and Aluminium
Our surveyors regularly undertake UTM surveys using the latest technology in UTM gauging machines to provide you with a good overview of your vessel.
